Rotters has its origins in the meetings of the community Environment Working Group of the local SRB partnership, Speke-Garston Partnership. Interest was initially expressed in launching a kerbside collection of recyclable organic materials. From the inception of the proposal, the intention was to collect both garden and kitchen materials.

Rotters has evolved into an organisation that provides household collections, as well as collections of food waste from businesses and schools. In addition an education programme for schools has been developed and delivered to schools in the South Liverpool Area. There is also the provision of horticultural training for adults of all ages and abilities.
